According to data from the Office for National Statistics the declining value of money (i.e. inflation) means that a pint of beer could cost £8 by 2060.
I would find it more believable if they'd said £8 a pint by 2016, and even that may be a generous target.
If inflation continues at 5% a year, a pint of beer that is £3 now will be £8 by 2031 :-(
ReplyDeleteExcept of course the price of beer goes up by more than inflation. In 1972, a pint of bitter cost me 13p. If beer prices had gone up only by inflation, it would cost around £1-30 now.
ReplyDeleteMy Dad was a pub manager. I can remember scoffing at him many years back when he said that the breweries were looking to introduce the 50p pint!

ReplyDeleteWhen inflation was rampant in the late-seventies and I saw my 25p pint rise to 35p in just a couple of years, I made the prediction on New Years Eve 1979 that by the same year 10 years hence beer would be £10 a pint. Since then I've stayed away from making predictions of that nature.
