The Cock & Pullet, Birkenhead

I'm preparing a blog which discusses the quality of beer in Wirral with emphasis on Birkenhead. It's a little out of date already because a new real outlet has just opened its doors. That statement is incorrect on two counts. It's always been a pub and always sold real ale. But the change is definitely worth shouting about.

The Cock & Pullet on Woodchurch Road used to be called The Royal. It was a slightly shabby locals' pub that somehow retained a market for John Smith's cask bitter. The 'For Sale' sign appeared in the summer and there were were soon whisperings that it was going to be a dedicated cask beer pub. The rumours were correct because the Cock and Pullet looks destined to be a much needed addition to the local real ale scene.

Owner Alan Tuohey tells me that the pub is a true Free House, rare in these parts. There are three handpumps to start with, although he hopes to increase this in future. One pump is intended to dispense Brimstage Trapper's Hat on a semi-permanent basis. That would be note-worthy in itself. Pump two will offer a beer from Liverpool Organic brewery with a rotating guest beer from the third pump. This afternoon St Austell Tribute was on sale, a beer not often seen in Wirral.

The pub is still a work in progress with re-decoration continuing during closing hours. The refurbishment is tasteful utilising traditional pub colours of dark reds and browns.  At first glance the situation doesn't seem that inspiring, on a main round surrounded by run down terraced housing. However, bohemian Oxton Village is less than a quarter of a mile away so the market is there. Birkenhead desperately needs this pub to succeed.

  6. The cock now boasts 6 hand pulls!! and a cask cider too. this pub seems to be going from strength to strength! unlike most of them in the area. Good to see local men making a go of it, as opposed to the usual pub-co bullshit. Stay local, buy local, support your local economy: drink local.

  7. Even better than the excellent range of real ales is that they are all only £2 a pint from noon till 6:30 monday - friday!

  8. Visited the pub recently on the strength of what I read on this site. As mentioned its great to see a local pub trying to do the right thing. A couple of pints of Trappers and a Wobbly bob, that'll do nicely thanks you.

One grave problem...my wife beat me at pool there. What kind of pub allows this kind of behavior!!

    1. Shame anonymous people have to leave slanderous comments about such a lovely pub, (see above). Anyone who knows the pub and the management, and indeed the staff will know this is a complete lie. I wonder if the anonymous person above is another local licensee perhaps??

    2. Sorry, I should have deleted the nasty comment, which I will do now. I've never seen any problems and will be in for a few pints tomorrow night.

    3. I too have my own pub and I did get to read the commens before they were removed. Sadly some of it was true. You can spend all the money in the world on your pub but take it from me, if you dont sort out the class from the riff raff you dont stand a chance! I respect the laws of my licence and I respect my residential neighbours, you have to or you are wasting your time. Dont let someone have one more pint beyond closing, dont allow the little screamers outside to piss off the people who have kids or work shifts. Ive been there, had everyone on my back and now Its sorted. Your pub now looks great, I only hope you dont lose It!

  11. Was over from Canada last February and an old buddy of mine told me the royal at the top of my old road had reopened now called the cock & pullet. A completely different pub than I remember. Had a great night, loved the cask beers and being a smoker it was nice they had a heated shelter out back with seats & tables. Hope to visit again in June.

  13. I reserve the right to remove posts that I consider malicious, unfounded or biased. I have no links with this pub but find it friendly with good beer. I have never seen any trouble or law breaking on numerous visits to this pub.

  14. The Cock and Pullet has had 10 different managers in almost as many months. It no longer features with CAMERA on account of it not knowing how to look after beer.As many pints are handed back due to being flat and often cloudy. You seldom see the same bar staff twice. It could be a decent pub if it wasn't for the expensive rubbish ale..
